报告题目：Offline Size and Online Scale: A Tale of Two Platforms
Reseller and marketplace are the two ways to organize platforms in the online market. Motivated by the fact that the relative scale of reseller to marketplace is larger in the United States than that in China, our study proposes a novel explanation, characterized by different pricing mechanisms to attribute such an online scale difference to an offline determinant, the firm size distribution. The decentralized pricing, commonly adopted by a marketplace to attract firms selling over it, is more favorable to smaller firms, compared with the centralized pricing set by a reseller. Thus, the relative scale of marketplace to reseller is larger in China, given that the offline firm size distribution in China skews towards small firms than that in the United States. The study supplements the literature by connecting online differences with offline determinants.
